Topwater Cadence

When fishing topwater, it’s all about the retrieve speed and cadence. The thing you have to figure out when trying to trick bass on a topwater bait is how fast to move your bait. No matter what you’re throwing – a walking bait, popper, buzzbait or frog – sometimes slow is better and sometimes fast is better. As a general rule, I like going with faster speeds in clearer water. In gin clear water, basically, the faster you reel it, the more they like it. But it isn’t always this way. The thing to realize about topwater cadence is that it changes all the time. It really depends on the mood of the fish, and you just have to experiment going slow, then fast, then erratic, and then trying them all again. Once you figure out the best cadence, hopefully you will catch a lot of fish.
